“And let there arise from you a nation inviting to good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is evil, and those will be the successful.” The significance of standing up for justice and standing against oppression is one of the most consistent forms of ibadah that we can see amongst all prophets and their stories in the Quran, including Dawud standing up to Jalut, Musa standing up to Firaun, and the Prophet PBUH against the Quraysh and the original Islamophobes. And this prophetic mission has been consistently carried on by the torch bearers of Islam and contemporary Islamic movement figures including Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Ahmad, etc. And to provide even more contemporary examples, we can take a look at Malcolm X’s fight in the Civil Rights Movement, and Imam Siraj in his battle with the war on drugs on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. Social justice proves to be a major part of our deen - it is a pillar in the Prophetic Mission and goes hand in hand with the Tawhid. We need a renewed understanding of how social justice is part of our beliefs. The Prophet PBUH stood up for justice throughout his entire life, and this was how he served Allah. Hilful Fudhul was something he participated in prior to the revelation. And throughout his life both before and after prophethood, he stood for the rights of those who were being oppressed. This action in itself is an act of worship.
