Love Shouldn’t Hurt Spousal Abuse Counseling & Prevention | Yaser Birjas #MASCON2019

Muslim Americans, especially women, face barriers to reporting abuse that other cultures may not. Domestic violence affects Muslims in the same way it affects anyone. Even if the barriers are overcome, some Muslim men may use religious texts to justify their violence or control, a form of spiritual abuse. It’s been a taboo subject in the Muslim community as there are many values around privacy in Muslim families. The Muslim community is in a dire need to professional counseling, for both men and women, to prevent such a growing trend in the community.

The Annual MAS-ICNA Convention is one of the largest and most diverse Islamic conventions in North America. The convention takes place in Chicago, Illinois every December during the winter holiday season.
