Why Do Muslims Say 'Peace be Upon Him'? | Dr. Shabir Ally

A viewer asked, “Why do #Muslims say ‘peace be upon him’ when mentioning their Prophet’s name? Does it imply any sort of worship of the Prophet #Muhammad? Dr. Shabir emphatically responds no, pointing out that the #Quran says clearly that the Prophet is a human being and only God is to be worshipped. He explains that Muslims say ‘peace be upon him’ out of respect for the Prophet. But he says this saying (peace be upon you) is used by Muslims as a beautiful greeting, and is also mentioned in the Quran: God addresses those residing in Paradise in this way, and so do the angels. Some people have looked a verse that says believers should send ‘salawat’ (plural of prayer, ‘salah’) upon the prophet and taken this to mean that Muslims are to worship the Prophet. But Dr. Shabir cautions that there is a preposition there which changes the meaning of the verb. So while ‘salah’ means to offer prayer to God, ‘salla Allah’ is to pray upon someone, meaning to ask God to bless that person
