Saved Sect? Theology and Ethics of Pluralism - Dr Yasir Qadhi & Dr Tariq Ramadan.

Sunni, Shia, Salafi, Sufi...just to name a few schools of thought within our community. Each school sees itself as rightly guided and lays claim to being the "saved sect." So how do Muslims navigate the choppy waters of intra-faith diversity? How do we remain faithful to our particularities while accepting differences? This session will examine the theology of inclusiveness and the ethics of disagreement in building the beloved community.

[Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, PhD, is the Dean of Academic Affairs at AlMaghrib Institute, the man behind the curriculum and other academically intensive programs like IlmSummit. Shaykh Yasir is known among his students for his excellent Tajweed in both Arabic and the English language (i.e. his perfect enunciation of every letter).

Shaykh Yasir graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences, completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah and a PhD in Religious Studies from Yale University.

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi is a resident Scholar of Memphis Islamic Center. He is also a lecturer at Rhodes College, in the Department of Religious Studies.]

[Tariq Ramadan is Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at the Oxford University (Oriental Institute, St Antony's College) and also teaches at the Oxford Faculty of Theology. He is Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, (Qatar) and the University of Malaysia Perlis ; Senior Research Fellow at Doshisha University (Kyoto, Japan) and Director of the Research Centre of Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) (Doha, Qatar). He holds an MA in Philosophy and French literature and PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Geneva. In Cairo, Egypt he received one-on-one intensive training in classic Islamic scholarship from Al-Azhar University scholars (ijazat in seven disciplines). Through his writings and lectures Tariq has contributed to the debate on the issues of Muslims in the West and Islamic revival in the Muslim world. He is active at academic and grassroots levels lecturing extensively throughout the world on theology, ethics, social justice, ecology and interfaith as well intercultural dialogue. He is President of the European think tank : European Muslim Network (EMN) in Brussels.]
