The Branches of Faith (Ramadan 2018 - Part 15): Modesty - Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi

Our Prophet(S.A.W) said: “And Haya(Modesty) is one of the Branches of Iman” One might ask, what exactly is Hayah?

The word Haya has the same root as the word Hayat, which means life. Ibn Al-Qayyim mentions that just like the body has its life, the life of the heart is its modesty and bashfulness. Therefore Haya is one of the main characteristics of Iman.

It is authentically narrated that once the Prophet(S.A.W) was lying down in his house and his shin was exposed. Abu Bakr came and then Umar came and sat down, and the Prophet(S.A.W) didn’t do anything. When the third knock was heard, they said that it was Uthman. The Prophet(S.A.W) stood up and covered his shin. When he left, both Abu Bakr and Umar seemed a little bit irritated. Therefore, they asked and the Prophet(S.A.W) answered: “Shouldn’t I have Hayah in front of a man even the Angels have Hayah of him” The meaning is that if he was laying down with his shin exposed in front of Uthman, he would be so embarrassed and would not be able to come and say a word out of shyness.
