The greatest of angels Jibrīl (‘alayhi’l-salām) asked the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) "Tell me about ihsân?”

The Prophet (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied “It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and though you do not see Him, He sees you.” ~ [Sahîh al Bukhârî & Sahîh Muslim]

Ihsân is when the slave engages in worship with such intense awareness of the fact that he is presenting himself before his Lord that it is as though he is seeing Him. A worship that is absolutely sincere where the heart of the worshipper is filled with humility, awe, and consciousness of his Creator.
