In Surat Al-Baqarah Allah refers to the Jews of Madina who denied the revelation of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The word “kafara” means to disbelieve in this context, but it was also used Arabs to describe the act of planting a seed in the ground and covering it up with soil. Literally, Allah is conveying the idea of hiding something, meaning that the word “kafir” does not merely refer to those who disbelieve, but to those who do so while knowing the truth.
