The word “ijtanaba” is usually translated as “avoid”, but a deeper look at its root, (jamb) reveals that the word also denotes closeness and appeal. When Allah tells us to avoid suspicion, He is also saying that he has forbidden it for a reason and that we must avoid it despite its appeal, popularity and the ease with which we can fall into its trap.
